We have chosen not to include information within this summary regarding certain protected characteristics where we are concerned about sensitivity or confidentiality of the data, including data relating to sexual orientation and gender identity.

As part of our compliance with the Equality Act we have considered which information is suitable for publication.  We consider it is not appropriate for us to collect some information from pupils in relation to some protected characteristics, including marriage/civil partnership and pregnancy/maternity.

Age as a protected characteristic does not apply in schools therefore this has not been included as part of the published equality data.

Under the 2010 Equality Act Governors have a responsibility to ensure the school adheres to the act and does not discriminate against a pupil, a potential pupil, staff, potential staff. When reviewing, updating and approving policies governors are mindful of this.

Governors follow the LA admissions policy to ensure pupils are not discriminated against in relation to admissions.  They monitor the way education is provided and that the access to any facility or service does not exclude a pupil.  Governors follow a fair recruitment and career development process to ensure staff are not discriminated against due to a protected characteristic such as race, gender, or disability.

Governors have a statutory duty to publish pupil equality data on the school website.  Provide a statement on how the school complies with the Public Sector Equality Duty and publish its objectives every 4 years.  (this is on the website)

Governors question and monitor via committee meetings, full governing body meetings, visits and the Headteacher reports:

The attainment gaps between girls and boys (gender) narrowing the gap in performance between disadvantaged and non disadvantaged and SEN and non SEN.

Support offered to EASL and LAC, Post Care, and PP that they are not discriminated form extra curricular activities music group and trips.

Encouraging understanding between religious groups (celebrations such as diwali)

Discuss bullying/racist incident logs and if required anticipate the needs of incoming pupils, particularly from a new group (Traveller).

Governors review the outcomes from pupil and parent surveys and listen to their opinions.  Pupil surveys are used in school to hear the pupil voice and opinion as well as the regular meeting of the Shiremoor Voice.
