Spellings

At Shiremoor Primary School, we follow the National Curriculum for spellings. A full breakdown and progression of spellings can be found in the English Appendix 1: Spelling.

English Appendix 2 includes progression across school for vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.

Read Write Inc. also incorporates spellings into the programme. Children practise age appropriate spellings alongside their phonics in Key Stage 1.

In Key Stage 2, Spelling Shed is also used to support the teaching of spelling in each year group. Spelling Shed's approach to spelling involves the relationship between sounds and written symbols as well as using morphology (the structure of words) and etymology (the origin and history of words) to help spell through meaning. The children are taught spelling rules during English lessons and also access a number of online games and resources to support their spelling practise at home.

In each year group, the children are taught a number of Common Exception Words/Statutory Spellings which do not always follow phonological/spelling rules. Children will be assessed on these spellings according to their year group at the start of each year and will regularly practise any words which they are not secure in spelling. Please regularly practise these spellings with your child at home.
