Spanish
At Shiremoor Primary School, we have developed an ambitious and engaging Spanish curriculum that aims to foster a love of language learning while laying a strong foundation for future linguistic development. Rooted in the National Curriculum, our programme promotes progression in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills across Key Stage 2. The curriculum has been carefully planned to ensure that all pupils, regardless of background or ability, are supported in developing confidence, curiosity, and competence in learning a new language.
We believe that learning a foreign language is a vital part of a broad and balanced education. It not only enhances communication skills but also deepens understanding of other cultures and broadens pupils' horizons. Our Spanish curriculum encourages active participation, creativity, and cultural exploration. Pupils are given opportunities to practise their language skills in a supportive environment, take risks with new vocabulary, and build transferable language strategies.
Our approach goes beyond vocabulary recall. Lessons are designed to be interactive, inclusive, and purposeful. Through songs, games, stories, and role play, pupils explore the structure and patterns of the Spanish language. They are taught by specialist or trained class teachers and use a range of high-quality resources, including digital platforms, to reinforce and consolidate learning. Grammar and pronunciation are introduced in age-appropriate ways and revisited regularly.
Pupils are given opportunities to write, speak, and listen to Spanish in real and meaningful contexts. Cultural awareness is woven throughout the curriculum, with pupils learning about life in Spanish-speaking countries, key festivals, and traditions.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils leave Shiremoor with a strong foundation in Spanish. They are able to communicate simple ideas with growing accuracy and show an enthusiasm for language learning that prepares them well for continued study in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
