Science
The science curriculum at Shiremoor Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and is designed to equip children with essential knowledge and practical skills, fostering curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. The curriculum is topic-based and is organised in a way that supports ongoing learning, carefully building knowledge (schema theory) over time and is differentiated to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring progression and continuity across year groups. It aims to support children in becoming informed individuals who understand and respect the natural world, their own bodies, and global challenges. The curriculum encourages children to apply scientific knowledge (substantive knowledge) and skills (disciplinary knowledge) to improve quality of life and prepare for future educational and career opportunities. Building cultural capital is a key focus and we actively involve the wider community in the learning process.
Shiremoor Primary aims to inspire critical and creative thought by linking practical activities with scientific ideas. We promote investigative learning, enabling students to collect evidence, question ideas, and communicate findings using appropriate scientific vocabulary. Key aims include helping children appreciate how science influences technology and society, encouraging questioning, and developing qualities such as curiosity, independence, and open-mindedness.
Our science curriculum is further enriched through cross-curricular projects, visible displays, and special initiatives like Personal Development Week, where pupils engage with professionals from scientific fields. Links with local universities and businesses provide real-world connections and role models, helping children see science as a viable career path. The curriculum also incorporates health education, teaching the importance of food, nutrition, and physical activity. Overall, the approach at Shiremoor Primary is inclusive, forward-thinking, and designed to empower children to understand the world and their place in it through science.
