PSHE
We are currently in the process of updating our PSHE curriculum to reflect the statutory changes coming into effect September 2026. This will ensure our provision remains compliant, relevant and aligned with both the latest guidance our core school values.
At Shiremoor Primary School we believe that delivering high quality PSHE is vital in providing children with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community. We provide children with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.
Children are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of our school and communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning.
At Shiremoor Primary School children reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
Our PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.
At Shiremoor Primary, our programme of study in PSHE across school is grouped into 3 core themes:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Relationships
- Living in the Wider World (includes economic wellbeing, citizenship and careers)
Pupils will cover each learning objective more than once throughout Shiremoor Primary School, refreshing each skill or area of knowledge where they are at that particular stage of development, before broadening their understanding further as they work on improving their skills, deepening their knowledge and developing new point of view as they mature.
Children are taught about the importance of financial literacy, how to stay healthy including food, exercise and sleep, how to identify a safe and healthy relationship including with families, friends and online and how key British values lead to being a good citizen in school life and the wider world.
Our curriculum is delivered through discrete PSHE lessons, however understanding the importance of the subject you will find cross curricular links in a wide variety of subjects including science, mathematics, computing and PE and during termly Personal Development Weeks. We also cover key areas throughout whole school assemblies across the year.
