Design and Technology
At Shiremoor Primary School, we have used the National Curriculum as a foundation to create an ambitious, engaging and carefully sequenced design and technology curriculum. This curriculum supports all pupils in developing confidence in a broad range of essential life skills and provides them with clear learning pathways from Early Years through to the end of Year 6. During the creation of the curriculum, leaders consulted with design and technology specialists to ensure the curriculum is challenging and prepares pupils effectively for KS3 and beyond.
We believe design and technology is a vital subject for all our pupils. Not only does it equip them with practical life skills, but it also opens doors to a wide range of future careers. Our curriculum encourages creativity and innovation, giving pupils the freedom to take creative risks in their designs, reflect on their work, and learn from their experiences. Through this process, we aim to foster a lifelong passion for design in a world that is increasingly shaped by technology.
Our approach to design and technology goes beyond the final product. We place a strong emphasis on the full design process (design, make, evaluate) and encourage pupils to think critically, step outside their comfort zones, take risks, and embrace mistakes as part of their learning journey.
We are especially proud of our commitment to cookery and nutrition. All pupils receive a solid foundation in cookery and hygiene, with every child cooking at least three times per year. To support this, we have invested in a dedicated cookery area within school and ensure that all pupils have access to the necessary equipment and ingredients to participate fully.
DT skills are interwoven across the wider curriculum to provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to revisit, consolidate, and build on prior learning. Strong links are made with maths, science, computing, and PSHE, enriching pupils' overall learning experience. Our curriculum exposes pupils to a variety of careers within the field of design and technology, equipping them with invaluable skills that will support their future education and life beyond school.
