Religious Education
At Shiremoor Primary School we believe that R.E. both supports and strengthens what we aim to do in every aspect of school life. Our caring ethos and the value which we place on the development of the whole child; spiritually, morally, socially, culturally and intellectually is reflected in the R.E. curriculum.
We deliver the RE curriculum through the Discovery RE Scheme of Work. This has been chosen as it not only reflects our approach to RE but it also allows the children to both learn about a diverse number of religions and to learn from them too. The Discovery RE Scheme of Work allows us to deliver the North Tyneside Agreed Syllabus for RE across a range of religions including Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism through its enquiry-based approach.
Important Information for Parents/Carers
In the UK, parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child, wholly or partly, from Religious Education (RE) lessons and collective worship in school.
This right is set out in Section 71 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 and applies to state-funded schools, including academies and free schools. Parents do not need to provide a reason for requesting withdrawal.
If a child is withdrawn from RE, the school will provide appropriate supervision during that time, although it is not required to provide alternative teaching.
Please note that this right applies only to Religious Education and collective worship. It does not apply to other curriculum subjects where religion may be discussed, such as history, literature, or PSHE.
Parents/carers wishing to withdraw their child from RE should contact the Headteacher in writing to discuss the request.
For further guidance, please see GOV.UK: Parents have the right to withdraw their children from religious education and/or collective worship.
